Bones of Memory Oringial Handpainted Canvas

History lives within us. Every experience, every struggle and every triumph leaves its mark, becoming part of who we are. Bones of Memory explores the invisible weight of collective memory, reminding us that our identities are shaped not only by our own stories, but by those who came before us.

Constructed through expressive layers of colour, abstract portraiture and instinctive line work, the artwork reveals a figure that appears both fractured and whole. Bold graffiti-inspired messages including Practice Makes Progress, Freedom Was Never Free, Our History Does Not Start With Slavery, Never Forget and Love Love More weave through the composition, creating a powerful dialogue about resilience, remembrance and reclaiming narratives too often overlooked.

The skeletal form acts as both metaphor and foundation. Bones represent what remains when everything else is stripped away - the enduring structure that carries generations of experience, resilience and truth. Vibrant yellows, electric blues, rich reds and expressive white lines move across the canvas like memories themselves, layered, imperfect and constantly evolving.

Rather than dwelling solely on the pain of history, Bones of Memory celebrates survival, growth and the importance of remembering with honesty. It asks viewers to acknowledge the past while recognising the strength that has been built upon it.

Part of the Bones of the Story collection, this artwork explores the connections between identity, ancestry and lived experience through a contemporary visual language inspired by street art, abstract expressionism and symbolic portraiture. Rich in emotion and layered meaning, Bones of Memory is a compelling statement piece that invites reflection long after the first glance.
